The Importance of pH Balance and Your Skin

The term pH stands for the power of hydrogen, thus the p and H for Hydrogen. pH is calculated on a scale of 1 to 14, and refers to the level of acid or alkaline in something. Anything below 7 is considered acidic, and above is considered alkaline. Someone with natural health goals is looking to maintain a body fluid level right at seven, which is considered neutral.

Most of us have heard this term, but very few of us understand what it means to the condition and youthfulness of our skin. Skin has a different pH than what is optimal for our body fluids. The pH of normal skin ranges from 4 to 6.5, which is slightly acidic. This pH level is sometimes called the skin's 'acid mantle'. One of the main functions of this acid mantle is to protect the skin and body from the absorption of bacteria. As bacteria cannot survive in an acidic environment, maintaining the correct level of acidity in your skin is vital.

If the acid mantle is disrupted, the skin also becomes more susceptible to damage. Over exposure to weather and sun can bring on dry skin in any season, whether the pH disruption is acid or alkaline in nature. To avoid getting dry skin or to treat dry skin, it is important to choose natural skin care treatment products that have the proper pH balance.

Alkaline conditions stronger than pH 8 are very irritating to the skin and, unbeknownst to most consumers, the majority of skin care treatment products are too alkaline. Even household cleaners that you dip your hands in or inhale are far too alkaline. Most skin care soaps have a pH factor of 9 to 11 and many household cleansers range between 10 and 12. Oven cleaners come in around pH 13, which is why using rubber gloves is recommended.

Some over the counter and prescription skin care is well above neutral on the acidic side. We are now talking about peels, blemish or acne treatments which contain high concentrations of glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid and so forth.

When the acid mantle is disrupted by using a non-pH balance skin care treatment that is too acid or alkaline, it takes about 14 hours for the skin to get back to normal. However, by the time healing could take place, we've often used the products again so the skin really never gets a chance to repair. This cycle of damage upon damage can lead to chronic dry skin.

Fortunately, this cycle is changeable as soon as you start consistently using pH balanced natural skin care. Start by reading all product labels. Often a label will state the pH or describe the product as 'pH balanced' which is supposed to denote a pH that approximates that of the skin - although, to be certain, look for the pH number, not just the 'pH balanced' label. Look for pH balance natural skin care that is between pH 4 and 7 and you will be on your way to repairing and preventing dry skin.

Once your skin care regimen is allowing for healing and proper skin health, be sure to ensure your success by using a pH balance makeup, instead of one that is going to wreak havoc with the acid mantle all day after you apply your makeup, causing another round of skin damage.
